What is a photo essay?
Updated: Nov 7, 2020
Hi, my name is Michael Slattery, this is a quick post about why I created aphotoessay. The goal of aphotoessay is to photograph authentically as possible the artistic struggle. I am creating a life long document about, what it will take to develop an art career. I hope to photograph a narrative that tells the truth. A successful art career comes from non-stop creating and shipping. The artist must be willing to take risks, face fear, and work through rejection.
During the quest to find my artistic focus I have felt discouraged, drained, tired, and at some points wanting to throw in the towel. I think it was Joe Rogan who shared the idea that we are in a movie about us. I started thinking, the struggle I am going through might make a good movie. Perhaps I can save Speilberg hours of research by providing him with a legacy of photographs, video, and audio that I created.
I am excited to share with you after much struggle, I have found my niche as a photographer. I am a documentary photographer. A photo essay will attempt to portray the truth. The truth is if you want to find your artistic calling or find out who you are as a person, you will be tested, challenged, and knocked down. Your motives, insecurities, and weaknesses will be exposed. You won't find out who you are through a course, book, or video. Though they might help. I believe You will find out who you are when you show up, ship consistently and share your work.
I must push myself and overcome fear and ship consistently. I need to get off the sofa and go out and shoot. Which is where aphotoessay comes in.
Aphotoessay is a life long photo document showing the leaps of faith taken to show up, ship, and share. Sometimes there are victories and sometimes there are setbacks and challenges, but all are worth it! I believe out of great struggle comes great photographs!
Thank you for reading! Keep showing up, shipping, and sharing. Feel free to share with everyone below what work you are shipping!
